2010 Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service a Roaring Success
On Monday, January 18th, over 50 volunteers from the University of Washington, Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church, and the Columbia City community, in partnership with the United Way of King County combined their efforts to raise food and funds for RVFB in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Volunteers held food drives at four grocery stores, while a group of ROTC students from the UW lent us their strength and energy to completely clean and re-organize the food bank from top to bottom.
We are profoundly grateful to everyone who participated in this incredible Day of Service which garnered nearly 7,000 pounds of food, $300 in cash, and the incredible gift of a re-vamped, re-organized and thoroughly clean warehouse and distribution area. THANK YOU ALL!
We endeavor to hold food drives every month. Please contact us to find out about upcoming dates.
What volunteering at a food drive looks like: Volunteer shifts are two hours long. During this time, you pass out a “shopping list” to people entering the store. Some people will purchase items inside the store and drop them off with you. You give a warm thank you and pack the groceries into the barrels provided by RVFB.
The stronger of our volunteers may wish to help load and unload bags, boxes or barrels of food into our vehicle.
Who can help: EVERYONE can help! Food gathering is a great activity for parents to do with their kids. Teens looking for community volunteer hours can lend a hand, and every community-oriented adult is a welcome volunteer. It's a great team-building experience for groups of all kinds, and a win-win scenario for volunteers, the food bank, and the grocery stores.
How do I volunteer for an upcoming food drive?
